Jada Pinkett Smith’s dark childhood – drug dealing ‘to survive’ and heroin addict mum

Jada Pinkett Smith used to deal drugs when she was younger, the A-list actress revealed.

During a Red Table Talk episode, Jada spoke with her mother Adrienne about her heroin addiction throughout Jada’s childhood.

Pinkett Smith revealed back in 2017 that she used to sell drugs and she previously spoke about the situation on Sirius XM’s Sway Universe: “When I first met [Tupac Shakur], when we first met, I was a drug dealer.”

Although Jada made the candid confession voluntarily, the Girls Trip star refused to elaborate as she teased that more would be revealed in her memoir, which was recently released.

However, in an interview with People magazine, she said: “I knew that anything that I needed was something I needed to provide for. I decided to sell drugs. Growing up, the drug dealers were the ones that had affluence.”

Jada “readily saw that as success” – and “considering her circumstances,” she claims her mother was “not doing well” and was a “high-functioning heroin addict”.

As a result, she “didn’t have the things she should have” and the “home she lived in was not taken care of”. Although she tried working “legit jobs” from the age of 12, including a role at the Gap, she wound up selling crack cocaine.

Throughout the People interview, she continued to open up about her childhood: “When you aren’t the priority of your parents, you don’t know how to be a priority to yourself. I had parents who were addicted to heroin.”

The actress began dealing as a “way to provide”

During her Red Table Talk, Jada revealed: “I think I didn’t find out my mother was addicted to heroin until I was in my teens. I could tell when my mother was high. She couldn’t make it on time to pick me up from school, or [she was] nodding off, falling asleep in the middle of something. You just realise: ‘Oh, that’s not being tired. That is like, a drug problem.”

Adrienne has been sober since the 1990s and has admitted she feels guilty for the “emotional and spritual damage” she did to the both of them, which Adrienne confessed was “devastating”.
