Katie Price’s mum issues health update as she suffered ‘setbacks’ after lifesaving transplant

Katie Price’s mum Amy Price has shared a major health update one year after undergoing a lifesaving operation.

The 71-year-old TV personality was diagnosed with idopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IBF) in 2017 and had a single liver transplant last year after falling into a coma and doctors telling her children she had just two weeks to live.

She says her illness and being faced with death encouraged her to write her autobiography, The Last Word, in which she tells her side of the story about being the mother to one of the most famous people in Britain.

Speaking about her health 12 months after her surgery, Amy told Daily Star and other press: “I’m not too bad. I’m a bit up and down because the weather has an impact on my breathing, it literally takes my breath away so when I go out at the moment I’m wearing a face mask because it’s easier for me to breathe with that then just trying to go along.

“It’s a slow process and it’s taken a while. I’ve had quite a few setbacks but that’s to be expected but I’m in the right direction. I can’t workout outside so I’m going on my bike in my gym and doing a spin classes. It’s not mega fast, it’s slow but I get up and down on it and I do a 30 minute workout and then I do some arms.

“The trouble is when you have a lung transplant it’s so easy to sit because you still get a bit breathless but if I don’t exercise, I won’t move forward. I had a single lung transplant but it would cease up so I’ve got to exercise to get it working.”

Amy is donating all royalties and proceeds from The Last Word to charities Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital, and St Barnabas House Hospice, Worthing.. She explained: “I wanted to do it because between them all they’ve helped me. I was sitting here one day, I was pretty poorly and I was on oxygen most of the time and I was thinking ‘what can I do’. I couldn’t do much, I couldn’t walk that far or anything and then I thought I’m going to write a book.

“When you know you’re close to dying your mindset changes a bit and you start thinking ‘Do my family really know me?’ ‘Do the grandchildren know me?’ ‘Do they know where they came from?’ and ‘Do you the know the background of my family?’. It’s never recorded because you never talk about it but that’s what started it.”

Amy says putting pen to paper was “therapeutic” but some sections had to be edited or removed which left her feeling “disappointed”. She said: “When I first started writing it I put everything in, all my thoughts, all my emotions and things I’ve never admitted to people before or even discussed with people so I put that all down but a lot of it also was edited because, you can imagine, and I was quite disappointed at that. A lot of it we had to reword in a way that wasn’t libellous and some bits had to be taken out to my disappointment.”

Looking forward to the future, Amy has revealed that she’s moving house in the near future and she wants to enjoy her life. Discussing what’s on her bucket list, the grandmother said: “Every day I think of something else I want to do. My latest one is I’ve decided to move house. I want a new chapter in my life so I’m moving somewhere completely different.

“There’s a little bit of sea between land and where the kids can get at me so I’ve got a bit of breathing space. When I told Kate she said ‘I’ll have to come and see you on a jet ski, a pink one’. That was her first reaction. We’re going to live in a motorhome until it’s ready.

“My lung is turning one next week so I’m going to try and celebrate that somehow. People have said ‘I want to know where that lung has come from’ because they think my personality has changed a bit, but it hasn’t it’s just that I’m getting on with life.

“I want to enjoy my life now. I don’t know how long I’ve got so I want to decide what I want to do but no doubt with Kate I’ll get roped into something. I don’t even know when it happens, I turn up at her house and the next minute there’s a camera in my face.”
