Madonna accused of 'blasphemy' for 'mocking Jesus' in Last Supper photoshoot

Fans have blasted Madonna after she re-created scenes from The Last Supper for a photoshoot.

The chart-topping musician transformed into the Virgin Mary as she appeared on Vanity Fair’s first-ever Icon Issue cover.

The Vogue singer donned a sword-pierced heart outside her chest with gold embroidery for the photoshoot.

In pictures from the magazine, Madonna, 64, also recreated scenes from The Last Supper and mimicked Jesus as loyal followers – different women wearing crowns – fell to her feet.

The photo shoot has created quite a stir on social media, with many denouncing the Hung-Up singer for disrespecting religion and mocking Jesus.

One fuming fan commented: “Disgusting. This is a mockery of Jesus,” while another commented: “This is so disrespectful.”

“Why can’t this pasty white witch leave Christianity alone??” said a a third, as a fourth commented: “Absolutely blasphemous this is not ok.”

Olivier Bouchara, Head of Editorial Content for Vanity Fair France, said: “In this very special issue, Madonna becomes Madonna again: an icon. Not just the embodiment of a musical trend or a style of dress, but a figure as disturbing as she is sacred.”

During the interview, Madonna said: “This is a good time for me — I’m gathering ideas, getting inspired, hanging out with creative people, watching films, seeing art, listening to music.”

The cover comes after Madonna revealed she would embark on a giant tour to celebrate her 40th anniversary as the Queen of Pop.

She will travel to 35 locations across North America and Europe for the monumental occasion in August, including London on October 24.

The performances will take fans on Madonna’s creative journey through multiple decades of her career.

She’ll pay special tribute to New York, where her music career began.

Madonna said in a statement: “I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.”

Talking about touring, Madonna told Variety last year: “I want to go on tour again. I’m a creature of the stage. That is my happy place.”
