In pictures from the magazine, Madonna, 64, also recreated scenes from The Last Supper and mimicked Jesus as loyal followers – different women wearing crowns – fell to her feet.
The photo shoot has created quite a stir on social media, with many denouncing the Hung-Up singer for disrespecting religion and mocking Jesus.
One fuming fan commented: “Disgusting. This is a mockery of Jesus,” while another commented: “This is so disrespectful.”
“Why can’t this pasty white witch leave Christianity alone??” said a a third, as a fourth commented: “Absolutely blasphemous this is not ok.”
Olivier Bouchara, Head of Editorial Content for Vanity Fair France, said: “In this very special issue, Madonna becomes Madonna again: an icon. Not just the embodiment of a musical trend or a style of dress, but a figure as disturbing as she is sacred.”
During the interview, Madonna said: “This is a good time for me — I’m gathering ideas, getting inspired, hanging out with creative people, watching films, seeing art, listening to music.”
