Matthew Perry was ‘in love’ with co-star Courteney Cox and ‘couldn’t get over her’

Friends star Matthew Perry was reportedly “in love” with his co-star Courteney Cox – and was “unable to get over her” before his tragic death aged 54.

Matthew played Chandler Bing in the NBC sitcom, eventual husband to Courteney’s Monica Gellar. But in real life, Matthew allegedly had “strong feelings” for her when they were working together. At the time, however, Courteney was dating her Scream co-star David Arquette, who she eventually married, though they divorced in 2013.

A source told Perez Hilton that Courteney sought solace with Matthew during her on-again, off-again romance with Snow Patrol star Johnny McDaid. The insider claimed: “It’s no surprise that Matthew was one of the first people Courteney called after Johnny left her. They’ve leaned on each other before. There isn’t any pressure to put a label on it just yet, but they’re excited to see where this might go.”

Sources added to Us Weekly: “Matthew’s always been in love with her. Matthew has never fully been able to get over her.” Neither star either denied or confirmed the rumours.

However, Matthew admitted in his memoir that he had a crush on Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green in the show. They’d met three years before filming and Matthew was “immediately taken by her”. He wrote: “[I] liked her, and I got the sense she was intrigued too – maybe it was going to be something.”

Jen was the first person Matthew called when he landed the role as Chandler, which was a “bad idea” – compounded by the fact that he later asked her on a date. He penned: “I could feel ice forming through the phone. Looking back, it was clear that this made her think I liked her too much or in the wrong kind of way.

“She declined [a date] (which made it very difficult to actually go out with her), but said that she’d love to be friends with me, and I compounded the compound by blurting, ‘We can’t be friends!’”

He was still “crushing” on Jen in the early seasons, admitting: “Our hellos and goodbyes became awkward. And then I’d ask myself, how long can I look at her? Is three seconds too long? But that shadow disappeared in the hot glow of the show. (That, and her deafening lack of interest.)”

Matthew was found dead in his hot tub on Saturday (October 28), with emergency services called to the scene for a suspected drowning. No narcotics were found at the scene, and initial toxicology reports revealed no fentanyl or meth in his system.

His official cause of death has been “deferred” pending further investigation. More in-depth tests could take weeks or months to complete. Authorities discovered anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and a drug for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his home.

Simultaneously, robbery homicide cops are reportedly investigating the death despite no signs of foul play. As the Los Angles County Coroner deferred the cause of death, it’s standard procedure for the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division to investigate high-profile cases.
