Peter Andre says ‘casual sex’ and ‘shirtless posing’ made him suffer nervous breakdown

Mysterious Girl hitmaker Peter Andre has revealed that he once had a nervous breakdown during the height of his pop career.

The 50-year-old I’m A Celebrity star was forced to seek psychiatric help at the age of 25 when partying and partaking in casual sex spiralled out of control.

Peter then went on to spend six years in psychiatric units and on medication but although he admits he lost himself, he insists he never touched any drugs.

The singer also claimed that his shirtless posing and “arrogance” was also a part of his demise as he longed for external validation and acceptance.

Talking to The Telegraph, he said: “It was an insecurity thing, trying to prove a point because of the years that you weren’t accepted.

“I don’t like who I became when I was just going with girls and not caring. I just went off on a tangent.

Despite his breakdown taking place several years ago, Peter said he still suffers from brain fog panic attacks to this day due to his past poor mental health, while he developed agoraphobia – a fear of going out – and vertigo.

Following his nervous breakdown, the I’m A Celeb star returned to his family home in Australia before going into hiding in America.

Despite his previous woes, Peter insists he is a completely different person today, and is much more modest and calm.

The father-of-four blames his past arrogance to be young stating it was a “self-defence mechanism”.

He added: “In the Nineties, guys were thinking, ‘Are you looking at my girl?’ and all that. But now I’m not threatening in any sort of way, shape or form.”

Peter became known to fans in 1989 when he became a contestant on an Australian talent show New Faces at 16 years old.

His charm and incredible talent resulted in a recording contract.

Not long after, the star was then sent to the UK where he recorded his debut single Drive Me Crazy, and his breakthrough single, Gimme Little Sign.

Peter’s popularity rose once again when he appeared as a contestant on ITV’s I’m A Celeb where he met his ex-wife Katie Price in 2004.
