Sir Ian McKellen reveals that he was ‘sacked as the quizmaster of his own pub’

Hollywood star Sir Ian McKellen has revealed that he was “sacked from his own pub,” as the quiz master.

The Lord of the Rings legend appeared on BBC’s The One Show tonight (May 19, 2023), alongside Endeavour’s Roger Allam to talk about their new play Frank and Percy.

During the programme Sir Ian revealed that away from acting, he owns a pub in London called The Grapes, where he used to work as the quiz master for more than a year.

“I don’t drop in too often, but I’m there for the quiz on a Monday,” said Sir Ian.

“I used to run the quiz actually. I used to be the quiz master. I devised all the questions – it took me a whole day in the week. Forty questions.”

However he revealed he was “sacked” from the role, adding: “I did this for a year and then my partner in the pub said, ‘We don’t need you anymore.’

“I was sacked from my own pub, doing a job from which I wasn’t paid,” leaving hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas in tears of laughter.

Sir Ian then praised the people who took over the quiz master role, saying: “Anyway they got professionals in and it is much better.”

Fans took to social media as they went wild for Sir Ian, who has appeared in hit films and TV series including Viscious, X-Men and Mr Holmes, with one saying: “Love @IanMcKellan,” adding: “Seems like he’s a thoroughly lovely man to boot.”
