Sofia Vergara’s rocky love life – teen wedding, embryo battle and Tom Cruise fling

Sofia Vergara has been through a lot when it comes to her love life – and she’s set to go through even more after announcing her split from husband Joe Manganiello.

Stunning Sofia, 51, best known for Modern Family, and hunky Joe, 46, who has starred in the likes of True Blood and Magic Mike, have split up after seven years of marriage, asking for “privacy” in the “new phase” of their lives.

But Sofia’s divorce from Joe will be her second, after her first at the tender age of 20.

She was also engaged a third time, and while that romance didn’t end in marriage, it did cause Sofia a whole load of aggro thanks to some frozen embryos they had made during their relationship.

So, as Sofia returns to the single market, Daily Star is taking a look inside her rocky love life.

Teenage marriage

Sofia married her childhood sweetheart Joe Gonzalez when she was 18, in her hometown of Barranquilla in Colombia.

The couple married in 1991 and welcomed son Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, who is now 31, a year later.

The marriage, which happened when Sofia was a rising model, ended just two years into it and Sofia was a divorcée at the young age of 20.

Speaking of being a single mother in 2016, Sofia said it really cemented her and Manolo’s relationship.

She added to People magazine: “I was really young when I divorced his father, so I give him the best that I could.”

Not long after Tom split from Penelope Cruz in 2004, he dated then up-and-coming Sofia.

According to biographer Andrew Morton, Tom, 61, had provided Scientology leaders with a list of women he’d like to date.

Tom’s pal Will Smith then invited Sofia to a pre-Oscars party in February 2005, which is where the duo first met.

The short-lived couple was only photographed together once, around February 2021 the same year, and they didn’t last much longer after Tom reportedly took her for a meeting with Scientology church leader David Miscavige.

It’s believed Sofia was not willing to renounce her Catholic faith, fearing she would be “struck down by God and burn in hell”, according to a friend.

After his brief romance with Sofia, Tom had his most high-profile relationship to date, marrying Katie Holmes.

Custody battle for unborn embryos

Sofia went on to date businessman Nick Loeb, after they met in 2010.

With things going well, they started the process of having a family and created some embryos in 2013 which were then frozen.

They signed a contract which made sure neither of them could move forward with the embryos without the other’s consent – but it led to a seriously messy custody battle for potential babies that had never even been born.

The couple split in 2014 before they could get married, and Nick, who is pro-life, wanted to put their embryos in a surrogate to bring them to term.

Sofia was against the idea and was forced to battle it out with Nick when he took her to court.

He filed a right-to-live lawsuit and claimed the embryos – which he had bizarrely named Emma and Isabella – were being deprived of an inheritance trust he’d made.

Nick dropped another lawsuit against Sofia when a judge ruled he would have to identify two women who he had got pregnant and subsequently had abortions.

He then turned his attention to the fertility clinic the former couple used, claiming doctors never told him the embryos would be destroyed or that Sofia could stop him using them if they split.

As of now, it is unclear whether the embryos are still there or have been destroyed.

Dirty tactics

Nick branded Sofia ‘classless’ in a damning letter during their court battle

Bitter Nick wrote an explosive letter during the difficult relationship and subsequent fall-out.

In it, he claimed they’d had “screaming fights” and he branded Sofia “classless” for speaking her native language of Spanish to him at the dinner table, while also accusing her of trying to “humiliate” him.

The letter was filed in court.

Nick wrote in it: “What I do not like and what I will not put up with anymore is the Spanish, and no I do not like hanging out with you when you speak in Spanish with others at the table.”

He also said: “Not only is it rude and disrespectful, it is classless. And for you to then berate, embarrass and humiliate me in front of others when I ask you to stop is not happening anymore.”

The businessman also claimed that one fight saw him shut himself in the bathroom, which led to Sofia “banging on the door like a maniac”.

True love no more

Shortly after her split from Nick, Sofia met hunky actor Joe Manganiello at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

They met via her Modern Family co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and got married in November 2015 after just over a year together.

Tying the knot in Florida in front of 400 guests, it looked like Sofia had finally found true love with her True Blood actor hubby.

But eagle-eyed fans noticed things may not be going well in May this year, when their Beverly Hills home was listed for sale for $18million (£13.8m).

They had tried to sell it in July 2022 for $20m(£15.3m) too.

However Joe appeared to brush off any drama and wished Sofia a happy birthday on Instagram – but days later it was reported they had split.

Sad split

The couple told Page Six in a statement: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce.

“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

Meanwhile, a source claimed that the duo had been “growing apart for a while now” and had been “taking some distance from each other to contemplate their future”.

And according to Entertainment Tonight, their time apart had been so they could focus on their careers and loved ones.

Sofia has been throwing everything she has at her beauty brand, and hosted an event for it in June at her home, which Joe was not present for – apart from in a “framed photo of the two of them kissing”.
