Strictly’s lowest ever scores – ‘illegal’ move, quitting show and ‘stationary’ dance

Throughout its time on air, Strictly Come Dancing has seen some high scores, with many couples receiving the maximum 40 points from the judges.

However, some celebrity contestants have been less fortunate and regularly sit towards the bottom of the scoreboard. The points, when combined with the public vote, help to make the final results for that week.

Whilst many celebrities score low and go on to progress well, others continue to lag behind throughout their run on the show. So, as the newest series of the hit BBC show continues, Daily Star delves into some of the lowest ever scores on the show, and who was unfortunate enough to receive them.

John Sergeant and Kristina Rihanoff – Cha Cha Cha

Former political correspondent John Sergeant made waves when he took part on Strictly in 2008. Despite being best known for dragging his partner Kristina around the floor for his paso doble, it was his cha cha cha that brought him his lowest score.

Kicking off the bizarre routine by speaking into his hand like it was a mobile phone, John and Kristina failed to impress the judges. The panel gave John and Kristina a measly 12 points, with Craig Revel Horwood being forced to bust out the almost-never used “1” paddle.

Dancing to The Beatles’ “Twist and Shout”, Sergeant’s time on the show was numbered, as despite consistently scoring low with the judges, John and Kristina were regularly voted through to the next week. John would opt to walk from the show in Week 10, believing that he could actually win the show which, in his words, would be “a joke taken too far”.

Anne Widdecombe and Anton du Beke – Salsa

Conservative politician Anne Widdecombe injected a bit of stiffness into the salsa, as she tried to keep up with professional Anton. Despite this, this was Anne’s lowest score, though she did begin to falter in later weeks – receiving scores including 13 and 14 points.

The judges picked up on the lack of flow, owing to a meagre 12 points for the couple. Craig once again scored Anne a 1, believing there had been an “illegal lift” used in the routine.

Throughout the routine, Anton can be seen guiding Anne around the dancefloor. At one point, du Beke was seen audibly counting steps so that Widdecombe could stay in time with her professional partner. Anne and Anton were eliminated in Week 10 of the show.

Susannah Constantine and Anton du Beke – Samba

What Not to Wear presenter Susannah Constantine openly admitted that she had two left feet going into her stint on the show’s sixteenth series in 2018.

Susannah struggled to make a good first impression in Week 1 of the show, as she garnered just 12 points for her waltz. Her novelty performance involved partner Anton du Beke emerging from her skirt.

Overall, the performance bombed with the judges, who wanted to see a more serious routine. She was booted off the show in Week 1.

David James and Nadiya Bychkova – Paso Doble

The paso doble requires passion and fire to create an aura of mystery and tension and score well. This, however, was not how things panned out for England goalkeeper David James in 2019.

Rather than injecting some flare for the routine, David kept things stiff as he threw his cape around in Week 2 of the competition. Together with Nadia, who practically threw herself around the dancefloor, the pair left the panel less than impressed – scoring just 10 points.

James kept the mediocre scores coming, surviving two dance-offs during his time of the show. But just two weeks after this disastrous performance, David and Nadiya were kicked off the show.

Quentin Thomas and Hazel Newberry – Cha Cha Cha

Quentin and Hazel have the unfortunate honour of holding Strictly’s worst ever score – a horrific 8 points. This is the only time a couple have earned a single-figure combined total from the judges.

Motoring expert Quentin was not a natural on the dancefloor and it showed immediately in his first performance. Together with Hazel, Thomas kept himself as stationary as possible, pointing his feet whenever he could.

The performance also marked the first time more than one judge had awarded a score of 1, with Arlene Phillips joining Craig in his disdain for the performance. The pair were promptly removed from the show as they were eliminated first.
