Paying tribute, one fan on X wrote: “Sad news about Joss Ackland. His performance in Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches is one of my favourite turns in anything. ‘Miss Violet, do you like funny stories?'”
Another fan posted: “RIP Joss Ackland. A mighty actor, and totem of that first wave of British Hollywood bastards. May flights of angels sing thee to thy diplomatic immunity.”
Someone else added: “Joss Ackland was a fantastic actor in theatre, tv & film but out of all his work, this is the line that comes into in my head unbidden at least one a week. It’s stuck in there forever,” along with a GIF of the star saying the words “diplomatic immunity”.
More tributes flooded in as fans praised his acting and shared GIFs of the star in his Lethal Weapon 2 role.
Ackland has appeared in over 130 film and television roles and has starred alongside huge names such as Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench and Tom Courtenay.
While on television, Joss appeared in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld and starred as C.S. Lewis in Shadowlands. Fans may also remember Joss in the Pet Shop Boys’ 1987 film It Couldn’t Happen Here as well as the video for their version of the song Always On My Mind.
A few years on from this, he admitted that he took to gig because his grandchildren were big fans of their music.
Joss was married to his wife Rosemary for 51 years before she died from motor neurone disease in 2002. Ackland was born in 1928 in Kensington, London and attended London’s Central School of Speech and Drama before making his professional debut at just 17.
