Bargain Hunt viewers were left baffled after a ‘dangerous’ item made a profit at auction as many thought it would make a loss.
In today’s episode (March 4), which aired on BBC One, friends Liza and Jacqualyn donned their blue team jackets as they went out in search of items that could rake in a profit at auction. But one of their purchases didn’t land well with fans.
The Welsh duo had picked up a golden Pyrene fire extinguisher, which was covered in dents, for just £34 — haggled down from £45. However, its life-saving potential was debunked with a warning from presenter Eric Knowles as it is too dangerous for use.

“Pyrene is not used anymore as it turned out to be a dangerous chemical,” the presenter said. “Items like this extinguisher are strictly decorative, and if still full, should never be used.”
Viewers were left concerned after hearing the warning about the antique item as they took to X (Twitter) to share their opinion about the potential risk to profits. One user said: “An old fire extinguisher. She must be flaming mad,” while another quipped: “Fire Extinguisher that’s more dangerous than the fire.”
Even auctioneer Andrew Stowe had his concerns about it. He warned that it was “very decorative” and that it “has no real use these days”.
He also specified that it “isn’t very collectable” so he expected it to make only £20 to £30 under the hammer. But once it was brought before the bidders, it had an unexpected result.

The pair cheered and gasped as the bids reached £70 when the hammer came down. Blues ended up finishing the competition with a winning profit of £88, having made a profit on all of their items in the show, including their expert’s bonus buy.
Fans immediately congratulated the team on social media. One user said: “The fire extinguisher is a hot item.” Another added: “Blues smashed it,” while a third commented: “Well done Blues.” Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: “Golden gavels.”
