Shalorna Warner and Lareesa Warner heart-wrenchingly came forward during a BBC Breakfast interview with Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, calling for changes to laws here in the UK.
The incident that unfolded on the A1 led to the tragic deaths of Zackary Blades, only eight months old, and Karlene Warner when their vehicle was hit by a drunk driver named Darryl Anderson.
Anderson, who was found triple over the permitted alcohol limit and driving at shocking speeds up to 141 mph, caused the accident back in May.
Having now been handed a 17-year prison sentence and slapped with a driving ban for 21 years, the family left grieving strongly argues for harsher punishments.
Their current campaign is pushing for permanent driving bans for individuals convicted of causing death due to dangerous driving.
Discussing their movement on BBC Breakfast, Shalorna shared her intense sorrow, saying, “Zackary and Karlene, they were both taken, they were so innocent.”
“They were both taken so tragically, it doesn’t sit right with me as a mother and a sister to sit and let that just be normal, it’s not normal,” as reported by the Express.
“If we can do something to help the next families, in us, getting a bit of justice then we’re doing something for them both and that’s why I need to do it.”
Discussing Anderson’s driving ban, she pointed out that most of his punishment would be spent behind bars.
An emotional Lareesa opened up to the hosts about her nephew: “He came to my house on Wednesday and we never saw him often because of where Shalorna lived. I didn’t think he’d remember me.”
Holding back tears, she added: “Then he put his hands out to me, and I was like, this is the start of the bond we’re going to have. Shalorna said he doesn’t put his hands out to everyone. I just knew- It’s all just been ripped away from us.”
Shalorna, who also had a child, chimed in: “She was the best mum. They’re together now and I know he’s getting taken good care of.
“It does bring me a little bit of comfort, to know they’re together as well.”
The family’s courage in sharing their heartbreaking story on social media has drawn admiration from viewers.
One person tweeted: “This is absolutely horrific! That poor baby, and her sister!! Can’t begin to understand how a surviving relative moves on from that!!”
Another shared: “Totally agree with this. Heartbreaking story.”
“Mum has no words. The bravery of this mum and her sister,” said one viewer
Someone else commented: “They have me in tears heartbreaking this one! Agree with them about the law being changed. Good luck girls. Please keep us posted on how it goes.”
BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
