BBC Breakfast got off to a rocky start this week as host Jon Kay was left to present alone.
His usual co-host, Sally Nugent, 52, wasn’t in the BBC studio on Monday (July 15) due to a technical glitch. The TV star was actually reporting from Berlin, Germany’s capital, following the Euro 2024 final that took place the previous day.
England went head-to-head with Spain in the thrilling football tournament, hoping to bring home some silverware. Unfortunately for the Three Lions and manager Gareth Southgate, victory eluded them.
In the final moments of the match, Spain scored their second goal, securing the win for their country and leaving the England team and their fans utterly heartbroken.
Sally was delivering the football news live from Berlin. She was in the middle of discussing the result and the possibility of Gareth Southgate returning as manager when she was abruptly cut off, reports the Mirror.
Luckily, the production team quickly rectified the error and managed to recover by focusing on Jon in the studio, who was presenting solo. Picking up where Sally left off, he said: “Oh dear, I think we’ve lost the signal, the sound signal there, from Sally.”
He filled the air with his words, saying: “We will be back with her and Jon and little bit later. Reflecting on the reaction of fans in Germany, those who travelled over in their thousands to Berlin but those who stayed here at home and gathered in their living rooms and fans parks, the local garden’s and pubs to watch as it unfolded.”
“It was full of highs and lows, all kinds of emotions as ever but that’s what we’ve come to expect from England games and our correspondent, Joe Inward was in the thick of it,” Jon chimed in, holding down the fort solo.
In another segment, Jon referenced his solo stint while chatting with telly favourites Helen Skelton and Gaby Roslin about what’s coming up on Morning Live.
The convo quickly veered off to indoor greenery, with Helen ribbing Jon: “Mark is raging that we haven’t got enough plants out here but not as cross as he will be with you Jon Kay, you haven’t even got a cheese-plant in there.”
“I’m bereft of a Sally, I’ve got zilch, just me myself and I this morning,” Jon quipped back, to which Gaby teased: “I hope you’re not calling her a plant.” He cracked a smile and retorted: “no especially not a cheese-plant.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am
