BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley, 59, flashes abs as she says gym ‘saved’ her from menopause

Jo Whiley has courageously opened up about her challenging journey through menopause, admitting it left her feeling “very weak” and prone to crying often.

The beloved 59-year-old BBC radio presenter shared her personal struggles with Women’s Health UK, recounting how she felt uncharacteristically emotional and somewhat lost until she found solace in weight training, which turned everything around for her.

She divulged to the mag: “I did go through a period of time when I felt like I was just a bit weak, but I think it’s probably when the menopause hit.”

Commenting on the hush around the topic at the time, Jo said: “When I was going through [it], I think the conversation wasn’t being had that vocally, like it wasn’t on social media with Davina [McCall] and her campaign [to raise awareness of menopause issues].”

Describing her ordeal, Jo stated: “I really lost myself. I cried all the time. I mean, I cry a lot anyway, but I cried all the time. I just felt very weak.”

The DJ then revealed how hitting the gym made a monumental difference: “Going to the gym and getting myself strong has played a really, really big part in helping me be the person I am today. It really saved me.”

While not a fan of pounding the pavement, Jo professed her newfound love for the weights room: “With running, I really have to make myself do it. But the gym. I love working out and doing weights”.

Always a proponent of a healthy lifestyle, Jo now emphasises the importance of regular health check-ups for overall wellbeing.

She went on to add: “I’ve always been healthy, and so [there weren’t] any major lifestyle changes, but it was going and getting health checks [and] having a yearly MOT.”
