Countryfile has announced a sad death on the show.
During Sunday night’s Countryfile episode (29 September), host Adam Henson delivered the news of a cherished dog’s passing as he documented his visit to shepherdess Katy’s farm in Cumbria. The show also followed Charlotte Smith’s adventures at the local farmer Anne Mair-Chapman’s, as she prepped her prize livestock for a keenly anticipated event and mingled with farmers looking to pick the perfect ram to strengthen their stock for the year ahead.
Within Adam’s segment, there came a touching disclosure from Katy herself who admitted finding it “strange” without the presence of her beloved sheepdog. At the beginning of the farm story, Adam said: “Over the last few years, we’ve been following the highs and the lows of young farmer Katy Laidlow,” reports Gloucestershire Live.

Echoing his words, viewers watched past footage from Countryfile episodes that highlighted when Katy and presenter Anita Rani were faced with the death of a lamb. Adam went on to explain: “Now I’m meeting her for the first time at an important point in the farming calendar. Shepherding on the uplands in the UK is an age-old practice, and at this time of year, farmers are gathering their flocks off the Fells and bringing them down into the valleys to wean the lambs, and Katy’s going to show me how it’s done.”
Katy opened up about her deep roots in agriculture during a convo with Adam, revealing that farming has been her entire life since her family moved to the farm when she was just four. As they talked about her farm’s variety of animals, Katy mentioned: “So we’ve got sheep, we’ve got cows, we’ve got goats and donkeys, but it’s a sheep that we’re gonna be focused on today.”
But things took a tough turn when it came time to gather up the sheep; Katy and her family were left struggling without their beloved dog, who had sadly passed away not long before. Adam chipped in with some details about their journey: “It’s a two-and-a-half mile journey from Fell to farm, and we’re heading up with Katy’s mum and dad, Kirsten and Andy.”
You could feel the pain in the family when Adam disclosed, “Sadly, one key member of the team, Jem, the family Border Collie passed away earlier this year, and this is the first time they’re bringing down the sheep without a dog.” While they pushed forward rounding up the sheep, Adam threw the question at Katy, “Are you missing the dog? “.
And she poured out her heart, saying, “I am actually, it is very strange as normally she would just be there at your heel making sure everything is going well.”
