Call the Midwife fans say ‘that’s awful’ as star makes ‘last episode’ announcement

Call the Midwife fans were left devastated as actress Laura Main issued a “last episode” update on social media.

The actress, best known for playing nurse Shelagh Turner in the BBC period drama, shared a behind the scenes selfie via Instagram all dolled up in her nursing blues and burgundy cap. She swiped on a pink pout and a hint of blush at the apples of her cheeks while grinning for the camera – but fans didn’t share her glee.

In the caption, Laura explained on Sunday (March 4): “Can’t believe it’s the last episode of Call the Midwife series 13 tonight! The last CTM pic I posted was of me looking rather windswept, taken after a day filming at the beach. So I thought I’d share a photo of me looking much more polished and straight out of the make up chair so you can see the usual standard of work by the brilliant @z.a.cmakeup!

“Must have been admiring her work myself on this occasion and decided it was a selfie sort of day! Episode 8, the series finale is on BBC One tonight at 8pm.”

Though that proved bad news for fans, Laura was keen to reassure them: “But don’t worry, there is going to be more made! And if you live somewhere that series 13 is yet to be shown, you’ve still got it all to look forward to! Thank you for watching.”

Fans soon poured into the comments section to share their woe at the idea of the series drawing to a close, with one penning: “So sad the season is coming to an end so soon but happy it’s returning again at Christmas. So happy it’s aired in Australia within a few hours after the UK so no having to wait!”

Another echoed: “Now that’s rubbish news. I wish the series was longer. Seems you just get fully into the swing of it and then it’s all over. More please!” Others branded the news “awful” and “devastating”, as one fan added: “Relieved to hear there will be more to come Laura!”

“I’m absolutely gutted! It feels like it’s only been on five minutes. Me and my mum are the biggest fans, especially my mum as she was brought up in the 60s East End and her mum was a nurse. You are our favourite character because my nan looked like you when she was a nurse,” another emotional fan wrote.

Fans of the show will be glad to hear that they can expect new episodes until at least 2026, as the show has been renewed by the BBC until the fifteenth series. But in the series finale, some viewers were emotional as two characters seemed to exit the show for good.

While it was reported that Olly Rix’s character Matthew Aylward would leave the programme for good before episodes aired, this Sunday, Helen George’s character Trixie announced she would join him in New York.

Turning to X, one worried fan said: “Trixie hasn’t left Call the Midwife for good… has she?! I’m not crying… you’re crying. Just something in my eye.”

Another said: “No, #CallTheMidwife, just no. Phyllis Crane, Trixie Franklin and Sr Julienne are the Holy Trinity, the three-legged stool on which Nonnatus House stands. Take away one leg of the stool, and what will happen if Trixie leaves?”
