Former Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has hit out at the soap – claiming people aren’t watching because of its “s**te” storylines.
The actor played Jim McDonald on the ITV soap – making his debut in 1989. Jim arrived on the cobbles with the rest of the McDonald clan, including son Steve (Simon Gregson) and ex-wife Liz (Beverley Callard).
And from 1989 to 2014, on and off, Charlie was a regular on the soap – and hit with viewers. He also played a big part in several dramatic storylines too including manslaughter.

But it seems Charlie, who has also appeared in the likes of Holby City and The Bill, is no longer a fan of the ITV soap. So much so, that he has now slammed it for its “woke” storylines.
This year, Corrie managed to bag around 2.6 million viewers at Christmas. However the soap missed out on charting in the top 10 most watched shows, coming in 12th place.
In comparison, a decade ago, eight million tuned in during the Corrie Christmas period. Meanwhile BBC One’s EastEnders made the top five. And now, Charlie reckons that people aren’t watching anymore because of the “sh*t” plots – and claims viewers are “fed up” with them.
Charlie told The Sun: “Viewers are getting turned off by too many young storylines. In my day, in the Nineties, we didn’t have any woke issues, we didn’t have any political correctness, we had none of that s**te. We were able to tell stories and tell them properly.”
He added: “I suspect now half the meetings that they have upstairs on the sixth floor are about what is politically acceptable, all this stuff that they feel they have to address. And the silent majority of TV viewers are not interested in the slightest by all this c**p.”

Charlie also said how he reckons actors that are starring on the the soap at the moment are nervous to speak out about any concerns they might have. He said: “Our comments mattered in those days.
“I think people are very scared nowadays. If we had a meeting, and somebody was not happy about storylines, we were within our rights to call a meeting.” He added: “I do know there are at least two long-term cast members who aren’t happy”.
