Doctor Who star claims ‘A-list’ actress falsely accused him of ‘copping a feel’

Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston has claimed an “A-list actress” once accused him of “copping a feel” as they filmed together.

The actor said the incident took place as he and the unnamed actress shot a sex scene, saying it was an “abuse of power” and that it left him feeling “betrayed”. Christopher, 59, opened up as he talked to The Independent about shooting steamy scenes and working with intimacy coordinators.

Asked if he’d ever felt uncomfortable filming a sex scene himself he admitted he had, explaining: “I did a sex scene with an A-list actress – not Nicole Kidman, who was brilliant – and she implied, in front of the crew, that I was copping a feel. Because she didn’t like me.”

The star said he was “fortunate” that it happened before the Harvey Weinstein scandal – which saw the disgraced Hollywood mogul hit with allegations of sexual assault and helped propel the #MeToo movement – as it meant he “wasn’t put in the stocks for it”.

“But I’ve never felt more betrayed by a fellow actor than I did that day,” said Christopher, who starred as the Time Lord in hit BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who in 2005. “I have to say to you that I would sooner have put my hands in a food blender than copped a feel of that person,” added the actor.

Christopher also said that he did not think it would have happened if an intimacy coordinator had been on the set at the time. Intimacy coordinators or coaches are people on the set of movies and shows who work to make sure actors and actresses feel comfortable shooting certain parts, such as sex scenes, those involving nudity or scenes in which there is physical contact.

They have grown in popularity and have become much more common in the industry since #MeToo, which saw countless women open up about their own experiences of harassment and assault.
