EastEnders fans ‘gutted’ as another beloved character confirms exit after Whitney Dean

EastEnders fans have been left heartbroken as another character is set to exit.

Earlier this year, Penny Branning made her return to the BBC One soap. The daughter of Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) first appeared back in 2008 played by Mia McKenna-Bruce.

But for the chapter’s comeback, Kitty Castledine has taken on the role. And it’s fair to say Penny has caused plenty of drama since arriving back in Walford from France.

Penny has even taken over Whitney Dean’s stall on the famous market, following the soap icon’s exit. But it’s now been revealed that Penny is following suit and is set to leave Walford next week.

In episodes this week, Penny told Lauren that she was heading back to France. There was no more information given, including whether it was a permanent return to France or a break.

And as expected, fans have been left gutted over the news of Penny’s departure. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: “With Penny going back to France next week – is that a permanent or just a temp exit? I hope it’s only temporary.”

Someone else chimed in and added: “It better only be temporary, they introduced her and have barely given her anything when she’s great.” A third penned: “I’m praying she comes back I love Penny she is lovely and Kitty is gorgeous.”

Another mused: “I just feel it’s permanent ngl.” A fifth wrote: “Gutted please tell me Penny isn’t leaving permanently, this is just a temporary break.”

It comes as Whitney Dean has also exited the soap. Last year, it was announced that actress Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney, had decided to leave the popular show. Since her first appearance in 2008, Whitney has been at the centre of numerous dramatic storylines.

Recently, she was devastated to find out that Zack Hudson, the father of her newborn baby Dolly, had cheated on her with her friend Lauren Branning. Following this heartbreak, Whitney made the decision to leave Walford for good on Thursday (May 23), taking newborn Dolly and foster daughter Britney Wainwright with her.
