Tracy-Ann Oberman has teased her new EastEnders storyline as her character Chrissie Watts returns to Walford for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The 58-year-old actress and playwright appeared on Wednesday’s instalment of The One Show (August 28) and explained the exciting moment she got the call from soap bosses to asking for her character’s comeback.
Speaking about her return to presenters Clara Amfo and Alex Scott, Tracy-Ann said: “The time was never right, and things were never right.
“But this time, Chris (Clenshaw) the new producer rang me. I was free, he told me the storyline, I sat down for 30 minutes while he spoke to me and I was like ‘yeah, I’m in!’.”
“It was so brilliant”, she added: “That story is really good.
Talking about returning to the iconic EastEnders set for the first time in nearly two decades, Tracy-Ann teased that not all her scenes are set in Albert Square.
She added: “It was weird. There are bits that aren’t quite on set, I’ll give you that.”
Chrissie Watts famously left Walford in December 2005 after she was imprisoned for the murder of husband, Den Watts (Lesley Grantham).
In a bid to protect their freedom, Chrissie alongside Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) and Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) buried Den under the floor of The Vic barrel store.
Chrissie lived for months under false pretences with Den’s beloved adoptive daughter, Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), and his son Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman).
Accomplice Sam was initially held responsible for the crime after she drunkenly dug up Den’s body on Sharon and Dennis’ wedding day.
But Chrissie’s actions were soon uncovered when Phil (Steve McFadden) and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) returned to the Square in a bid to free their sister, and Chrissie has been imprisoned ever since.
EastEnders are remaining tight-lipped about the finer details of Chrissie Watts’ return storyline, however the character will be back in EastEnders this autumn.
The One Show airs daily at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
