Gladiators star confronted top presenter who he thought was ‘some nut case’ backstage

Gladiators Cobra star Michael Wilson once confronted a major presenter who he thought was a trespasser.

The 90s Gladiator was part of the original lineup and said he knew the current host of the show Bradley Walsh “before he was famous”.

Cobra revealed that Bradley used to date one of the show’s cheerleaders and as a result, was in the BBC studios a lot. However, one time he confronted him face to face to ask what he was doing on set as he thought he was trying to “break in”.

He explained: “Yeah, well, Bradley was married or had started dating our head cheerleader Donna Derby. The cheerleaders used to hype the crowd up and get the kids down and be great with the audience participating and happy.”

“I first met Bradley before he was famous backstage, with his daughter from a previous relationship, I thought he was a nut case trying to sneak in and break into the arena, I went up to him and said ‘What you doing?’ and he said ‘Oh I’m Donna’s boyfriend’.

“Then he was there all the time and he even ended up doing Celebrity Gladiators. He’s a nice bloke – and there’s a fantastic connection to the show there.”

But what does Cobra think of Bradley hosting the show alongside his son Barney? “I think Bradley Walsh and the son doesn’t work really,” he answered. “I think they need a sportsman maybe. But Bradley is everywhere, he’s on everything, and it’s too saturated. He’s a nice bloke though.

“I think they should’ve tried to get someone like Chris Akabusi or they need someone younger like Michelle Ackerley, she’d be fantastic, she’s great on every programme that she does.”

Fans of the show have also been torn whether or not they think the pairing should continue to host the programme. Some viewers have taken to social media to share their thoughts.

One said: “Bradley & Barney Walsh are the only negative on the #Gladiators reboot. Everything else is a joy to watch.”

A second penned: “#Gladiators I love Bradley Walsh but for me Barney isn’t working, he’s not a natural presenter, he looks out if his depth. I feel this is nepotism at its finest.”

However, others have spoken up to defend the father and son duo, with one writing: “This new series of #gladiators is pretty tidy. Don’t understand the hullabaloo about Bradley and Barney Walsh presenting. Doing a grand job imo.”

Another viewer supported: “However, there were some viewers who did back the father and son. One fan typed: “I just have to see Bradley and Barney Walsh and I’m happy.”
