One of the stars of Good Morning Britain has admitted she had a completely different career before joining the ITV show.
The smash ITV news programme came back to screens once again on Friday (April 12), as hosts Kate Garraway and Adil Ray ran through some of the biggest stories of the day. The pair then handed the floor to Marverine Cole, who was reading the show’s news bulletin which went out hourly.
During the show, Marverine crossed over to reporter Jonathan Swain, who was at the Aintree racecourse ahead of the much-anticipated Grand National taking place on Saturday (April 13). Swain revealed that bosses at the racing festival have made changes to the course and the race itself to ensure safety and welfare for the horses running.

After throwing the link back to Cole, she gave fans a shock as she revealed that she previously had a career within the world of horse racing – but not the job one would expect. She explained: “Little known fact – I used to be a cashier in a bookies!”
Marverine’s admission came as a shock also to Kate and Adil, who audibly gasped in the studio at Cole’s revelation. Cole continued: “So I always used to study the horses and look at form…”
Garraway, 56, chimed in and asked Marverine about her time in the bookmakers. “Were you ever tempted to put a bet on yourself?” she asked as Ray was still stunned at Marverine’s confession.
Kate’s co-star responded: “Always. I used to have a system, but I think I’ve lost my touch now, I’ve gotta say.” She quipped as she laughed: “So I will be playing it safe and betting on favourites!
Having recovered from the shock of her admission, Adil, 49, asked Marverine: “What was the most ridiculous bet you’ve put through? Do you remember a time when someone came in and you went, ‘Oh my god, do you want to do that?’ – with thousand being put on?”
Cole recalled as she responded: “No, what I remembered distinctly was that it was a bookies in Lozells,” Adil quickly chimed in a reminded viewers that Lozells is an inner-city area of Birmingham, as Marverine stuttered through her story.
“Lots of people used come in and bet, and kind of splash on some pound coins,” she recalled. “They’d come to me and say, ‘Put £20 on this horse!’ – never understood why they were in pound coins though.”
To finish off the chat, Marverine closed herself as she admitted that she gets caught in the excitement of the race herself. She quipped as she added: “But I do love a flutter!”
