Gogglebox favourite George Gilbey died of head and torso injuries after a horrific fall through a skylight, an inquest has been told.
The 40-year-old telly star was reportedly working on a roof when he tragically fell to his death through a plastic skylight in Shoeburyness, Essex, on March 27. The Chelmsford inquest heard that George suffered severe head and torso injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Essex coroner Lincoln Brookes opened and then immediately suspended the inquest on Monday, due to an ongoing criminal investigation. Coroner’s officer Deborah Frost detailed how Mr Gilbey had been “working on a roof when he fell through a plastic skylight, landing on the ground below”.

Despite rapid response from paramedics and police, he couldn’t be saved, with the initial cause of death given as “traumatic injury to head and torso consistent with fall from height”.
George, hailing from Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, shot to fame on Channel 4’s hit show where families and friends give their take on the week’s TV. He became a household name alongside his mum Linda McGarry and stepdad Pete McGarry, who passed away at 71 last year.
Gilbey also made waves in the Celebrity Big Brother house back in 2014, charming viewers all the way to the final.
Coroner Mr Brookes confirmed he’d put the inquest on pause following a written plea from Essex Police, who are conducting a criminal probe into the incident. He’s set to revisit the case in four months.
A man in his 40s, from the Witham area of Essex, was previously taken into custody on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter related to the incident. He has since been released and is currently under police investigation.
