Gregg Wallace apologises for ‘any offence caused’ after ‘misogynistic’ comment

Gregg Wallace has apologised after he was accused of “misogyny” over comments he made regarding recent accusations made against him.

It was confirmed last week that Gregg would be temporarily stepping down from hosting MasterChef after a number of accusations regarding his behaviour emerged. A growing number of female celebrities have spoken out, claiming he made lewd comments on set.

Over the weekend, Gregg attempted to defend himself, saying the comments were coming from “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age”. However it didn’t sit well with many social media users, with some accusing him of “misogyny”.

Now, Gregg has broken his silence once again and apologised for “any offence that I caused”.

Gregg Wallace posted an apology video on social media

He said: “I want to apologise for any offence that I caused with my post yesterday and any upset I may have caused to a lot of people…

“I wasn’t in a good space when I posted it. I’ve been under a huge amount of stress, a lot of emotion.”

The post, shared on Instagram, continued: “I felt very alone and under siege yesterday when I posted it. It is obvious to me I need to take some time out while this investigation is underway.

“I hope you understand and I do hope you will accept this apology.”

Gregg has denied the accusations against him. He is accused of making lewd comments to staff and celebrity guests on a number of shows over a 17-year period.

His lawyers have also said “it is entirely false that he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature”.

Gregg has since said that the accusations have come from “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age”. His words sparked backlash, with Ulrika Jonsson saying she was “seething”, and Kirstie Allsopp describing them as “unacceptable”.

Television host Gregg said on Instagram: “I’ve been doing MasterChef for 20 years, amateur, celebrity and professional MasterChef, and I think, in that time, I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, all different backgrounds, all walks of life. Apparently now, I’m reading in the paper, there’s been 13 complaints in that time.

“I can see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age, just from Celebrity MasterChef. This isn’t right.

“In 20 years, over 20 years of television, can you imagine how many women, female contestants on MasterChef, have made sexual remarks, or sexual innuendo? Can you imagine?”

In another video, he claimed “absolutely none” of the people he worked with on shows had made a complaint against him.
