Iconic BBC kids show makes huge comeback after twenty years with reboot and new cast

One of the BBC’s most well-loved children’s shows is making a comeback with a new cast.

Hit series Balamory has been confirmed to be returning to screens by the BBC after twenty years. Despite only running for just three years, the beloved show became a staple in households across the country.

Balamory was a fictional town made up of brightly coloured homes and businesses, each corresponding with a different character. Among the names were PC Plum, Edie McCredie and Josie Jump, all of whom had their own colour and each having a different role in the town.

Perhaps the best known resident of Balamory, however, was teacher Miss Hoolie, played by Julie Wilson Nimmo, becoming the face of the show at the beginning of every episode. Premiering in 2002, the show quickly amassed a huge following, before eventually being retired some three years later.

Now, the series is set to make a glorious comeback to our screens for a new pilot version. Two series have been commissioned by the corporation, each consisting of between ten and fourteen episodes.

Speaking at the reveal of the plans, the BBC’s Head of Commissioning for Children’s and Educational Programmes said that the revamped show will reintroduce Balamory to whole new wave of kids. Kate Morton explained: “A whole new generation will discover and enjoy Balamory as we bring families together with this new update for CBeebies.

“It will be a real treat for parents who grew up with the show to now introduce their little ones to the brightly coloured world getting to know a host of old and new characters together,” Kate added. During its initial run, Balamory was critically acclaimed for its use of bright colours and incredibly detailed learning aspects.

At the height of its fame, some two million viewers were tuning in across the country every week to watch the show. The commercial and critical success of the show even went as far as to earn it a BAFTA TV Award.

Julie Wilson Nimmo has come out in support of the return of the show. Beaming with glee in a statement, Julie said: “It’s the craziest and best news ever that Balamory is coming back.

“I seriously think this is bigger than the Oasis reunion,” she added. “Everyone I know loves the show and has been missing it.”

It has been confirmed that there will be at least some new faces making their way to the village to set up shop. However, it is not yet decided whether some of the original cast from 2002 will reprise their roles in the children’s drama.

But despite the public’s joy at seeing the show make a comeback, fans will have to wait some time to see the programme’s new episodes. The BBC added that the new series of Balamory will not be airing on CBeebies until 2026, with two years of production and post-production having to take place before fans can revel in the show once again.
