Coronation Street viewers have been left unhappy as they feel Steve McDonald has been “replaced” on the ITV show.
Happy go lucky Steve, played by Simon Gregson, has been a key part of the show since 1989 and is one of the most beloved characters in Weatherfield. But lately, Steve has been having marital issues with his wife Tracy Barlow.
Tracy has been seeing football star Tommy Orpington behind his back. With the pair trying not to get caught, all was finally revealed after Tim Metcalfe caught them together.
But although Steve offered to forgive Tracy, she admitted to falling out of love with him. However, with Tommy moving away, Tracy quickly tried to patch things up with her husband.
She shared her loneliness with their daughter Amy, confessing that she missed having someone to “put the bins out” and “give her a hug”. She asked Steve to reunite.
Later on, Tracy headed back home to beg Steve to take her back. And it didn’t take much for Steve to give in and admit he still loved her.
But viewers were far from impressed with Steve’s quick change of heart. Heading over to X formerly known as Twitter, fans though reacted displeasingly to the situation.
One viewer commented: “Steve is a mug and showing his daughter it’s OK to let people walk all over you”. Another mentioned: “I’m really starting to dislike Steve. What have they done to him? ”
A third asked: “Why have they replaced funny and lovely Steve with a wet doormat?” Another penned: “God Steve’s pathetic. They’ve massacred his character”.
While a fifth annoyed spectator said: “Steve’s character assassination wouldn’t be so bad if he had a bit of self respect.” Even though Tracy said she wanted to get back with Steve, their union failed to last.
Near the end of the episode, Tracy found out that her lover Simon did want her to come to Spain with him. Distressed that she almost missed the opportunity, Tracy called off her relationship with Steve and told him she was leaving him- but this time it was for good.
