Jamie Theakston announces cancer diagnosis as he steps back from Heart Radio

Jamie Theakston has announced that he has cancer.

The 53-year-old Heart Radio host took to Instagram on Tuesday (September 17) to reveal that he has been diagnosed with Stage 1 laryngeal cancer following an operation on his vocal chords. He said he’d be taking a break from the show but would try to return later this year.

He wrote: “Hi folks, as you know – I recently had an operation to remove a lesion from my vocal chords. The biopsy has identified this as Stage 1 Laryngeal cancer. So I have cancer but cancer doesn’t have me!

“The prognosis is very positive and I’m hoping to be back with you in October. Until then, I’ve been told to give my voice a rest and leave you in the mostly capable hands of JK and Amanda.

“Huge thanks to them and all the Global family who have been unbelievably supportive. Be thankful for this day, and when I see you next, I’ll have a great story to tell… Jamie x.”

His Heart co-host Amanda Holden rushed to support him. She wrote: “Our wonderful @jamie.theakston has been diagnosed with stage 1 laryngeal cancer. His prognosis is very good and he has an incredible team around him. Jamie.

Jamie’s co-host Amanda told him “we love and miss you,”

“We love and miss you and look forward to seeing you very soon. With @sophietheakstonjewellery, your gorgeous boys, Us and the entire nation with you.. YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS.”

Amanda also commented on the post, writing: “Love you darling”. Ashley Roberts, who also hosts on Heart, commented: “Sending all my love buddy. [heart emoji]”.

Carol Vorderman wrote: “Sending best Jamie [heart emoji] thank goodness your listeners spotted the change in your voice, all found early and you’ll be back keeping everyone happy very soon”.

Jamie Oliver penned: “big love brother you got this sending love xxx,” and Heart’s station Global added: “Sending you all our [heart emoji] and best wishes, Jamie!”.

Jamie and Amanda host Heart Breakfast every weekday morning from 6:30am until 10am. But Jamie has been on Heart since 2005.

Jamie and his wife Sophie live in west London and share two children. They got married in 2007.
