The Grinch’s legendary bottomless Santa costume is going under the hammer as a treasured piece of film memorabilia, but the lucky winner will have to pay a pretty penny
The iconic Santa costume worn by Jim Carrey in The Grinch is up for auction.
With Christmas just around the corner, some of the film’s most well-known pieces of memorabilia are going up for sale. Among the items going under the hammer is the Grinch’s Santa costume from the hit film How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Worn by legendary funnyman Jim in the 2000 Christmas classic, the bottomless costume features a red and white coat, with a Christmas hat, all worn during the filming of the movie. The outfit was custom-made for Jim Carrey himself, and also comes with tags for the designer John David Ridge, as well as tags for Jim himself.

However, prospective buyers will not have to do any of his evil deeds in order to claim a piece of movie history. Instead, the lucky winner of the auction will have to shelf out a minimum of a whopping $55,000 (£43,000) for the pleasure of owning the Hollywood treasure.

The costume also comes with the unique green haired leggings that were worn by Jim as he took on the role of the Grinch, who terrorised Whoville in the movie with his hatred of Christmas. Also included in the lot is the chunky black waist belt that kept the coat tightly strapped onto the Grinch’s big belly in the film.
However, the costume is not in mint condition and prospective buyers have been warned that the outfit does have some wear and tear due to the amount of times it was worn during filming. Some of the scenes filmed did cause the outfit to rip, including the hilarious moment where the Grinch gets stuck down the chimney as he tries to steal the town’s presents.
A description for the item reads: “The leggings are hand-knotted onto Lycra material, with the hair made from olive-dyed yak hair, adding to the authentic, textured look. Designer John David Ridge meticulously created the jacket and belt, each proudly labelled with a ‘John David Ridge’ tag and ‘Jim Carrey’ typed on it.”
It adds: “Renowned special effects artist Rick Baker and his team crafted the hair suit legs for Carrey’s use, further enhancing the realism and originality of this iconic costume. The coat is made from luxurious terry cloth, while the belt is constructed from genuine leather, further elevating its craftsmanship.”
It is believed that the costume, known to millions of viewers worldwide is the only one that Jim Carrey owned that has even been given up for public auction. Bids are expected in from across the world as film buffs race to own a piece of movie memorabilia as it goes under the hammer on Saturday (December 14).
How the Grinch Stole Christmas was a box office smash in both the United States and across the world, pulling in over $345million when it was released. Since its release, the film has gone on to become a staple of Christmas viewing, as children across the world fall in love with the miserable Grinch.
