Mariah Carey suffered a Marilyn Monroe moment with her see-through dress as she walked the black carpet at the 2024 Recording Academy Awards.
The We Belong Together hitmaker attended the event hosted by the Black Music Collective, where she was awarded a Global Impact Award along with Lenny Kravitz, as a recognition of music that has “greatly influenced the industry” and “whose legacy of service inspires countless individuals worldwide”.
Mariah looked incredible in a golden gown on the carpet; the floor-length skirt was comprised of sheer mesh that draped around her ankles and gathered up into a huge bustle at her waist. On top, the dress was comprised of a satin corset and tight V-cut bottoms – and the effect left her crotch and legs almost entirely exposed.

The sleeveless number clung to Mariah’s every curve before descending into a plunging neckline, the ribbed corset featuring sheer panels over her ribs as she dazzled on the black carpet. She upped the ante with an incredible diamond jewellery set – a serpent-style necklace was woven around her throat, while matching snakes acted as ear cuffs above her drooping diamond earrings.
The stunning star teased her brunette tresses into elegant curls that cascaded around her shoulders and swiped on a pastel pink pout for the occasion, adding spidery mascara and a hint of blush to her cheeks. She stepped out at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles for the awards ceremony.
Holding her award up on stage, Mariah joked: “Is this a real Grammy? I haven’t seen one in so long!” It’s been nearly 20 years since she last scooped one of the coveted prizes. In 1991 she picked up her first two – one for Best Pop Vocal Performance in the Female category, and another for Best New Artist.
She’s also won Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best R&B Song, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. But in a cheeky exchange with the audience at the ceremony, she added: “It’s weird, I don’t know. We’ll figure out what this is later.”
Mariah added: “When I first started in the music business, I was often told to conform to certain expectations. I was not encouraged to focus on my love for Black music. It took countless arguments, endless tantrums — I’ll call them tantrums — and mostly unwavering determination but, eventually, I was able to reveal my authentic self, as they say, and create music that came from my heart.

“In doing so, I discovered a newfound sense of freedom and fulfilment. I accept this award on behalf of every person who has ever felt silenced or marginalised, who has ever been told their voice doesn’t matter. Your truth matters.
“We will continue to pave the way together for a future where authenticity is celebrated, diversity is embraced, and music has the power to change the world,” the songstress concluded.
