Channel 5’s new show My Wife My Abuser had viewers crying and shouting for men to talk about their troubles after it aired on Monday (March 18).
The programme told the sad tale of Richard Spencer, who suffered at the hands of his wife, Sheree Spencer for 20 years. Sub-titled The Secret Footage – it gave people a glimpse into Richard’s life and saw him becoming upset whilst talking about the bad things his wife did to him during their marriage.
Viewers were left shocked when he opened up about the worst instance. “The most demoralising thing that happened to me,” he began. “I was sitting on the bedroom floor because Sheree wouldn’t let me sit on the bed. She got up to go to the toilet and I was facing where the bathroom was, the next minute I just realised that she defecated on my head.”

In a sound clip from when it happened, you can hear Richard say: “I don’t deserve it.” Sheree responds: “You do deserve it. Go and scrub away you c*** and clean my s*** up,” reports the Mirror.
Channel 5 viewers soon saw distressing videos from a hidden camera that showed how Sheree was mean to Richard in their house in Bubwith, East Yorkshire. In one video, you can see Sheree spitting at Richard and grabbing his neck.
Richard had to get stitches on another occasion when she hit him on the head with a wine glass. He gave the cops 43 photos of his injuries, 36 videos and nine voice recordings to show how bad his ordeal was.
Commenting on the awful scenes, viewers took to X (formerly Twitter), to say they hoped other men in similar situations will be brave enough to open up to others. One user wrote: “This poor, poor man. There must be many men out there suffering. I hope they come forward. #MyWifeMyAbuser.”
Another added: “I hope that after this has aired on tv any MAN who suffers any sort of domestic violence doesn’t feel ashamed or alone to speak out. I hope it helps others come forward. YOU matter and how your treated matters #Mywifemyabuser.”
A third penned: “This is hard to watch. So glad he’s done this though, more people need to be aware of abuse #mywifemyabuser. And a fourth said “It’s crazy to think if she actually said it was him and he hadn’t gotten his own evidence. She’d probably have gotten away with this. Breaking my heart #mywifemyabuser.”
