Netflix has announced the premiere date for its newest true crime drama, a collaboration between Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The duo previously worked together on Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which aired in 2022.
The series detailed the horrific killings committed by Jeffrey Dahmer (played by Evan Peters) from 1978 to 1991. The show was a smash hit on Netflix, racking up 1 billion viewing hours within its first 60 days. The 10-part series is one of only four shows, including Stranger Things and Squid Game, to reach such an achievement.
In the next chapter of the Monster anthology series, set to debut next month, Murphy and Brennan delve into another infamous case that gripped the nation in the 90s. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story recounts the tale of two brothers who murdered their parents on August 20 1989, and the circumstances surrounding the savage killings.
Netflix also unveiled a 50-second teaser of the drama, which can be viewed above. It features newcomers Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch in the roles of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, reports the Manchester Evening News.
During their court proceedings, the brothers claimed years of abuse as the reason for killing their parents. However, the prosecution contended that their motive was to inherit the family wealth. Both were found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the chance of parole.
Joining Chavez and Koch in the star-studded cast are Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny, who will portray parents Jose and Kitty Menendez. Nathan Lane also joins the ensemble as investigative journalist Dominick Dunne, who reported on the trials for Vanity Fair.
Ari Graynor is set to play Leslie Abramson, a leading Los Angeles defence attorney from the ’80s and ’90s who becomes Erik Menendez’s main counsel. Leslie Grossman of American Horror Story fame will portray Judalon Smyth, a former patient and lover of Erik Menendez’s therapist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, who found herself embroiled in the Menendez case – and who ultimately played a pivotal role in Lyle and Erik’s arrests.
Dallas Roberts will take on the role of Dr. Jerome Oziel, the self-preserving and not entirely ethical therapist who Erik Menendez consults after his parents’ murder, while Jason Butler Harner will portray Les Zoeller, the Beverly Hills PD detective heading the Menendez murders case. A straightforward, logical man in pursuit of the truth.
Following Dahmer’s success, Monster was commissioned for two more instalments featuring infamous figures who left a significant mark on society.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story arrives on Netflix on September 19.
