Netflix’s newest reality TV show has been sending shockwaves across the internet.
After watching the series, in which contestants compete head-to-head for a chance a further social media fame, one person tweeted: “Watched [a] few episodes of [The] Influencer on Netflix. Holy shi-, this is probably the most dystopian reality TV show I’ve ever watched. However, as [an] ‘influencer’ myself, I think this show has some good input too on being a creator. But man…some moments are hard to watch.”
Another person commented: “Sounds like a thrilling reality TV show! Who needs a crown when you can have the title of ‘most influential’? It’s like a modern-day Hunger Games but with more selfies and fewer arrows.”

Someone asked if “everything is Squid Game now,” a second person said: “It was only a matter of time before a show like this was made I suppose,” while a third typed: “Ok umm…why? Seriously, why [blank emoji face].”
“I just watched The Influencer on Netflix, why is it giving Black Mirror,” added another streamer with a slew of crying emojis. “The Influencer is truly a diabolical variety show – giving content creators shock collars and mak[ing] then give each other ‘dislikes’. A true test of validation and pudency [laughing emoji] Also makes you realise how fake social media […]” quipped another savage comment.
People have been comparing the series to the Black Mirror episode Nosedive, which is “set in a world where people can rate each other from one to five stars using their smartphones for every interaction they have,” which eventually impacts their socioeconomic status.
The episode stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Lacie, “a woman desperate to boost her social media score who hits the jackpot” when she’s invited to the wedding of her former best friend, who is a higher status than her.
Throughout the episode, the characters use devices to rate each other after ordering coffee, sharing a phone call or simply smiling at one another in the street. The ratings affect a person’s score, similar to the contestants on Netflix’s The Influencer.
Black Mirror is a sci-fi series first released back in 2011. The anthology show, which was created by Charlie Brooker, is speculative fiction and intended as a commentary on modern life.
