Only one in 100 people can make it through Netflix’s ‘scariest horror movie’

There’s a horror film on Netflix that reportedly only one out of every 100 people can make it all the way through – it’s just that frightening.

Released in 2017 and added to Netflix a year later, that film is Spanish flick Veronica. It follows a teenage girl in Madrid in 1991, tasked with looking after her younger siblings at home. But earlier that day, she’d fooled around with a Ouija board and held a séance at school – inviting a dark force into her house.

According to Netflix, only one in 100 people made it through the entire thing, with plenty of viewers sharing their fear via social media. One wrote on X: “Veronica on Netflix was based on a true story and if that doesn’t freak you out a little you may need Jesus.”

Another echoed: “Okay I’m watching Veronica on my own. I’ve nearly had to turn it off twice… I’m only halfway through.” As someone else said: “Umm just watched the Spanish horror movie on Netflix Veronica and I legit almost cried [because] it’s so scary, holy sh**. That was a well done possession movie. Never sleeping again.”

While a fourth social media user said: “Started watching Veronica on Netflix (huge REC fan so interested in anything Paco Plaza is involved in) but the demon walking down the hallway scene freaked me out so much I had to turn it off.”

In case you’re wondering, the movie is based on the real life case of Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro, who participated in a Ouija board ritual at school to try and contact the dead boyfriend of one of her pals. Partway through the ritual, a nun who taught at their school came in and smashed up the ‘evil’ board, supposedly releasing a puff of smoke that entered Estefania through her nostrils.

Just months later, Estefania died in hospital of an “unexplained, sudden and suspicious respiratory restriction”, with her family admitting she was distressed leading up to her passing. Estefania reportedly saw strange shadows and heard voices, believing she was being stalked by something evil.

Her mother claimed she started speaking in tongues and foamed from the mouth and nose – with rumours scratches appeared on the girl’s skin, or that she was able to levitate. It’s been suggested that the Ouija board was haunted by the ghost of her grandfather, who died prior to the events.

Her mother Concepción claimed his last wish was to “make his family’s lives impossible from beyond the grave”, with eyewitnesses claiming she became possessed by his demonic presence. Even official police reports claimed unidentifiable noises were heard from the girl’s house, with strange stains appearing under beds and a Jesus figure torn from its crucifix.

Born in 1973, Estefania was around 18 years old when she died, becoming synonymous with what came to be known as the Vallecas Case.
