Pirates of the Caribbean star Tamayo Perry has passed away after being discovered with multiple shark bites following a surfing session in Hawaii.
The 49-year-old was enjoying a surf during a break from his lifeguard duties near Laie, Hawaii, when his body was found at 1pm on Sunday (June 23). He was declared dead at the scene, and his identity was confirmed once his next of kin were informed.
The Hollywood actor had been a surfer for over 15 years and had an impressive film and TV career before dedicating himself to saving others as a lifeguard. The actor featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and made appearances in Lost, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Crush.

He also participated in several advertising campaigns for brands such as Coca-Cola and Nissan Xterra. Apart from his acting career, Tamayo taught others how to surf through Oahu Surfing Experience alongside his wife, Emilia Perry, reports the Mirror.
In his biography, the star opened up about his passion for surfing all his life. He wrote: “As a devoted waterman, I’ve gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, not only from what I’ve accomplished, but also from what I’ve suffered.”
In his tell-all book, But what fans may not know about the star is that he suffered a horrifying near-death experience out on the open ocean years before his death. In his tell-all book he recounted his terrifying incident in the waves.
Tamayo revealed: “A number of years ago while surfing Pipeline on the Extra Large size, I was involved in a freak accident that turned into a near-fatal experience. The incident happened all because of someone else’s lack of awareness.
“The lessons I’ve taken from that event have inspired me to my goal of instilling proper surf etiquette and safety into those whom I teach.” Tamayo joined Ocean Safety in July 2016 as a North Shore lifeguard and competed in the Pipeline Masters Trials.
He recalled: “In 1999, I was launched on to the world stage when winning the prestigious Pipeline Master trials. This allowed me a spot in the main event where I was able to upset the No. 1 World Title Contender, showcasing my skills in some of the biggest, rawest wave conditions the Pipe Masters competition has ever seen.”
Emergency crews believe Tamayo may have suffered more than one shark bite before he died. His family has asked for privacy at this time.
Members of the public have also been warned to stay out of the water, with shark warning signs posted around the area.
