Pirates of the Caribbean star Tamayo Perry survived a string of close calls before his life was cut short by a fatal shark attack, and he even said he could ‘sense’ the beasts.
The 49-year-old was found with several bite marks on his body when found by the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services earlier this week. He had been seen surfing off the coast of Goat Island near Laie in Hawaii when his body was discovered at around 1pm on after a someone reported seeing a man who appeared to have suffered shark bite.
He was taken to the shore via jetski, but could not be revived. It has now emerged that he had posted several times on Facebook about bumping into sharks.

“Can people smell sharks around??? I don’t know if it’s my imagination but I swear I can smell when they’re around,” Perry wrote in a June 2019 Facebook post.
In July 2015, he mused on Facebook about the infamous moment surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by two sharks in South Africa. He described it as a “great indication” that Jesus’ mercy is “more then [sic] sufficient”.
“Regardless, sharks freak me out and I’m glad the Good Lord had Mick’s back today,” Perry wrote. “Only the Lord can say when it’s your time.”
In another online post, Perry, 49, described himself as a “Jaws Fan.”
“It’s like knowing you could get in a car and get in a car accident,” Tomayo’s wife, Emilia Perry, said of shark attacks after her husband’s death. “You don’t, you don’t, you don’t, then you do. He hit his head in 2004 and he got 50 stitches and 25 staples,” Emilia added on one of his several close calls.
Tamayo also once surfaced with a leg gash just millimeters from his femoral artery.
However, shark attacks were never a serious concern. “We all talk about it, but if you love surfing it’s not gonna stop you from paddling out,” said Jesse King, 37, a lifeguard who worked closely with Tamayo.
“We had so much fun. It was awesome. He had a really beautiful, full life. It was really, really fun. Just constant laughter,” Emilia said. She recalled her husband as “larger than life,” while Jesse and other friends agreed he was an “amazing person.”
“He was full of life, full of passion in everything he did. He never did anything with partial effort. He did everything full throttle all the time,” Jesse said. “Any room he was in, he would bring the light with him. He always just made time for you.”
