Many Rihanna fans may not even know she starred in an iconic horror role.
In the show Bates Motel, Rihanna played Marion Crane in the final season that premiered on her 29th birthday in 2017. Her character worked at a real estate firm and was involved in an affair with the married Sam Loomis, who booked a room for them both at the Bates Motel.
Unbeknownst to the couple, the freaky Norman Bates – played by Freddie Highmore – watches them having sex through a peephole that pokes through their room from his office. Her character is the modern day version of the hotel guest who is killed in Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film Psycho, which Bates Motel is based on.

Over on Reddit, fans discussed Rihanna’s acting in the show’s eerie scenes and praised the Fenty Beauty star. One person wrote: “I think Rihanna was great as Marion Crane. That may be an unpopular opinion, but I LOVED her arc and the difference from Psycho. The fact that she was a huge Bates Motel and Hitchcock fan makes it better too.”
Someone responded: “Agreed. It was a surprised and it worked. Also glad they didn’t try to recreate the classic, put their own spin on it and that was smart.” Another person said that they were “hesitant about her acting abilities” but they “enjoyed” her role “very much”.
“She was a breath of fresh air, I didn’t want her character to be killed and I loved the twist. Marion was really mysterious and intriguing,” gushed another Rihanna fan. Back in 2017, Elle claimed that Rihanna had to knock back a few drinks before rewatching her intimate scenes on the show.
The publication wrote: “Rihanna’s two episode appearance debuted […] with some steamy sex scenes and she could not handle it. Riri was so cringe out by her on-screen [love]making she needed a drink, or two.”
“In fact Robyn’s infamous shot-taking formed into a drinking game with her friends in the form of downing their drink every time someone says Norman, which is, turns out, quite often.”
