Selena Gomez’s changing looks – health issues and ’embracing’ new body

Selena Gomez looks as gorgeous as ever but has admittedly gone through some noticeable changes throughout the years.

The star has been accused of having surgery and “tweakments” but stands firm that her transformation was in fact caused by her health issues.

The stunning singer, 32, has become sick and tired of slamming criticism over her looks – and we don’t blame her. Just like anyone in their 30s, Selena is going to look different now from what she did in her teens, but this fact hasn’t held off people speculating online.

Gomez has often faced public scrutiny about her looks, with people claiming that she had procedures such as a nose job, chin implant, and even a boob job. However, Selena has attributed these to natural causes.

She has also been incredibly open about her struggles with the autoimmune disease lupus, which can cause facial swelling. She reportedly takes Prednisolonealso which can contribute to a rounder face.

Selena underwent a kidney transplant in September 2017 due to complications from lupus. After coming under public scrutiny for her appearance, Selena commented in a 2019 video that it was the “first time” she “really started noticing more of the body image stuff,” which made her question herself.

She explained: “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me, that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

On a TikTok Live, Selena told her loyal fans she “holds a lot of water weight” when she takes her lupus medication. The star added: “I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.”

While she puts her illness and medication down to some differences, she also admitted to only having Botox in 2022 which she confirmed again in December 2023.

Over the years Selena has embraced her natural body, noting that she doesn’t “have to be that 19-year-old body shape anymore.” She is huge on body positivity and commented that people always moan that she’s either “too big” or “too small”, meaning she can never win.

The Rare Beauty founder said on TikTok in April 2022: “Honestly, I don’t care about my weight because people bitch about it anyway. ‘You’re too small,’ ‘you’re too big,’ ‘that doesn’t fit.’ ‘Meh meh meh meh’. B***h, I am perfect the way I am. Moral of the story? Bye.”

In March 2023, she posted to her cosmetic brand’s Instagram account: “Something I wish I could tell my younger self is: Appreciate the face and the body that you have. May not look like everyone else, but you are who you are, and be proud of that.”

Selena tries to ignore trolls but in one circumstance she responded to fan speculation on whether she had gone under the knife. Marissa Barrionuevo, who works as a physician’s assistant at a plastic surgeon’s office, shared a clip talking about Selena’s face.

Marissa said: “When it comes to Selena, I literally have no idea what to attribute her physical changes to. People say lupus, people say other things. I don’t know, and at the end of the day, let’s just leave her be. I feel like she’s been through enough in her life, and she’s beautiful regardless.”

Selena commented below: “Honestly I hate this. I was on stripes because of flare up. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.”

In a panic, Marissa issued a heartfelt apology to Selena and responded. “I adore you. I really do mean the best, so I apologise if this rubbed you the wrong way in any way whatsoever. You don’t owe it to anyone to tell us why you don’t look the same as when you did when you were a teenage or in your twenties.”

The Disney star singer replied: “I love you. Not about you. I just get sad sometimes.”
