Corrie icon ‘not watched soap in 15 years’ and doesn’t know major character

A former Coronation Street star has confessed that they haven’t watched any episodes of the ITV soap in well over a decade and has no idea who one of the biggest characters is

A Coronation Street star has snubbed the ITV soap.

Ex-Coronation Street writer Daran Little has revealed he’s not tuned into the soap since hopping over to rival show EastEnders 15 years ago. He also openly admitted he’s “no idea” who one of Corrie’s current leading ladies is.

The BAFTA-winning writer, 58, got mentioned in a tweet on Tuesday celebrating the 38th birthday of Dolly Rose Campbell, alias Gemma Winter-Brown from the iconic ITV series. He cheekily responded: “No idea why I’m being tagged in this. I haven’t watched the show for 15 years and have no idea who this actress is, but hope she has a nice birthday.”

He said: “Since people seem so interested in my viewing habits: up to 1985 just Coronation Street. 1985-1988 both Coronation Street and EastEnders. 88 started on Coronation Street,” before explaining he stopped watching EastEnders.

“2010 left Coronation Street, started on EastEnders so for past 15 years just watch EastEnders no Coronation Street. I only intend to watch EastEnders in future,” he explained.

Little clarified: “Can I be clear. Since 2010 when I started writing EastEnders I have not watched a single episode of Coronation Street.”

“I keep in contact with old friends – writers and actors – but don’t know any who started in the last 15 years. The Street I knew is in the past,” reports the Express.

Daran admitted he hasn’t watched the show in well over a decade

When asked about why he hasn’t tuned into the soap that was his home for over two decades, Daran confessed that he prefers to “focus” on his current projects.

“I haven’t watched Hollyoaks since I left that either. When I work on a soap I focus on that show. I’ve never watched Emmerdale cos I’ve never worked on it,” he spilled.

Daran’s journey began at Coronation Street as an archivist and he has since authored 11 books, a mix of fiction and non-fiction, delving into the world of the soap and its beloved characters. He even teamed up with Betty Driver to write her autobiography, which hit the shelves in 2000.

Before waving goodbye to the cobbles in 2006, Daran had written 95 episodes of the iconic soap, notably introducing its first openly gay character Todd Grimshaw – initially portrayed by Bruno Langley and now by Gareth Pierce.

He’s also the brains behind fan-favourite personas such as Sean Tully (brought to life by Antony Cotton), Archie Shuttleworth (played by Roy Hudd) and Bev Unwin (portrayed by Susie Blake), among others.
