Downton Abbey cast ‘stank’ on set as bosses enforced wild ‘no-washing’ rule

Downton Abbey star Sophie McShera, who played Daisy Mason in the hit series, has shared some surprising behind-the-scenes details about the show’s on-set rules

The Downton Abbey cast “stank” while they were on set.

The much-adored historical drama, set in post-Edwardian Britain, graced our screens from 2010 to 2015 and chronicled the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.

Sophie McShera, who portrayed Daisy Mason on Downton Abbey and also featured as Ros McCain in Waterloo Road, revealed that the wardrobe department enforced a strict “no wash” policy to maintain the authenticity of the period costumes.

Chatting with the Daily Mail back in 2013, the actress confessed: “We do stink, as they don’t wash our costumes. They have these weird patches, which are sewn into the armpits and which they wash separately,” reports the Express.
