Gene Hackman’s wife’s final hours recorded in heartbreaking footage before death

Betsy Arakawa, 65, was found dead alongside her Hollywood actor husband Gene Hackman, 95, in their property back in February and some of the last known footage of her has now been released

Footage of Betsy Arakawa’s last hours has been found.

A heartbreaking clip shared by New Mexico police shows the final moments of Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa. Betsy, aged 65, sadly died of hantavirus in February 2025 and was discovered beside her husband, 95-year-old actor Gene Hackman, who is believed to have died a week after she did.

Their pet dog Zinna was also found deceased and “mummified” at the site due to dehydration and starvation, while two other family dogs were found alive.

A newly released video captures Betsy on February 11 as she went shopping in Santa Fe. Surveillance tapes show her wearing blue jeans, a dark coat and a face mask while heading to Sprouts Grocery Market for essentials around 4pm that day.

She continued on to Shine Pet Food to grab goods for her beloved dogs. Betsy moved independently, managing to enter and depart both establishments with no discernible ailment impacting her well-being, reports the Express.

Gene Hackman’s death was accredited to hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, exacerbated by Alzheimer’s as an underlying cause. Arakawa’s death was caused by hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is commonly transmitted by rodents.

At the scene, police found endearing handwritten notes between Gene and Betsy. The actor affectionately called her “lovely girl” and signed his letters with a heartfelt “Love, G”.

One note was particularly touching: “Good morning. Happy several days after your birthday. Sorry still about the dinner and having to ask for your help, although it was appreciated. Love you and the guys, G.”

In another snippet, Gene opened up about his health struggles, writing: “Ho, ho, I am off to see the wizard, the wiz of achie, pokie. She stabs me here and stabs me there, she stabs me almost everywhere (almost). But I survive because after I am still alive. (But sometimes just barely).”

Betsy may have been wearing a mask while shopping as it was recently revealed that she had requested to reschedule a massage appointment shortly before she died, due to the fact that Gene was feeling unwell.

She informed her masseuse that she would cancel “out of an abundance of caution” but informed them that Gene had tested negative for Covid-19.
