Daily Star reporter Ed Gleave took a trip to see the new Snow White flick that’s been embroiled in controversy after Disney decided to use CGI dwarves instead of real actors
Snow White has been dogged by controversy but it deserves to be a box office hit. It’s more entertaining than the 1937 flick it is based on. The storyline has been tweaked to make it far more interesting.
Rachel Zegler is outstanding as Snow White in the new Disney movie with a performance that boasts plenty of likability, nuance and charisma. Having CGI dwarfs has divided opinion but it works well. Doc is hilarious, Grumpy is brilliant fun and Dopey is charming.
The only weak link is Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. She isn’t convincing, terrifying or camp enough. And her vocals are out of tune.
Thankfully she isn’t in it much, so don’t let her put you off.
This is one of Disney’s best live action remakes. People who want to moan will inevitably find problems, but kids – and big kids – will love it.
The Star previously reported that the new Snow White movie is featuring a real dwarf after Disney faced backlash for using computer generated characters instead of real actors.
British performer George Appleby plays Quigg, who is one of the heroes in the Disney live action flick. His character is one of a team of bandits trying to overthrow the Evil Queen, played by Gal Gadot. He appears throughout the film and is central to the storyline.
An insider said: “George plays one of the key characters in Snow White. He’s part of the main storyline about the residents of the kingdom trying to overthrow the Evil Queen. His performance is fantastic.”
George has been a successful actor for more than a decade. Most of his roles have been on TV shows with appearances on the small screen version of Willow, Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Life’s Too Short and Brassic.
The star was also a double for Peter Dinklage in film Cyrano.
George’s role in Snow White is likely to silence many of the critics who have slammed the film for not featuring real-life actors to play the seven dwarfs.
Bosses are under fire for using CGI technology to create animated characters for Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Doc, Sleepy and Bashful.
Many are furious little people who struggle to get acting work weren’t given the chance to play the roles in the flick, which is a remake of the 1937 Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
In a response to the criticism, a Disney spokesperson said: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”
