Documentary maker Stacey Dooley has previously opened up about her past living in Luton, losing a friend to drugs, her shoplifting phase and dealing with a father who wasn’t around
Stacey Dooley had a rather wild past.
The documentarian grew up in Luton and has previously opened up about what it was like growing up surrounded by drugs. Dooley said: “Drugs were always available when I was growing up in Luton.”
“My pals did loads of gear. Everyone was taking pills and sniffing coke. “Boys would take pills at school in their lunch break.”
Stacey said that she has previously “witnessed people taking heroin” and once went out with a boy who was “heavily involved with dealing coke”.
“I remember going into his room one day and there were scales out and he was bagging it up. I’ve seen it all.” Sadly, Dooley has also revealed she once lost a friend “to smack before his 18th birthday.”
Her mother Diane also once told The Mirror that Stacey “never had a bond” with her father as “the circumstances prevented it”. She said: “When he tried to come back in her life in a more meaningful way when she was aged 13 it was too late for them to reconcile.”
Stacey has also confessed that she went through a phase of shoplifting when she was younger, but was never tempted by drugs as “being totally out of control is just not for her”.
Dooley later left school at just 16-years-old but four years later, she was already working with the BBC. She presented a documentary titled Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts which focussed on the damaging effects of the fast fashion industry.
She has a lot of fans due to her blunt, no-nonsense hosting style and she later went on to land her own series, Stacey Dooley Investigates, back in 2009. However, she’s always stayed humble and thanks her mother for her “work ethic”.
“She’s always worked really hard and now, I try to do the same. If I’m ever lucky enough to have children, I want them to look at me and think ‘Mum goes to work, standard.”
