The Handmaid’s Tale fans have hailed the latest episode as the “best” despite two heart-wrenching deaths.

The final season of the show, starring Elisabeth Moss, has aired just three episodes in the UK on Channel 4 and Prime Video, however fans in the US watched the penultimate episode this week. With just one episode left to go, the drama has seriously stepped up a level as June continues her plan to take down Gilead.

She had returned to Gilead undercover with a plan to kill as many Commanders as she and her team of rebels could. June was working with a number of allies within Gilead, including Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), who in recent seasons have had a change of heart about the horror that Gilead has become.

In an earlier episode of the final season, she realised her allegiance with love interest Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) was ruined, after he revealed her plan. It caused a blood bath at Jezebels, with a horrific scene showing the helpless woman murdered by a firing squad in the showers.

In the latest episode to air in the US, June and the other handmaids, as well as Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), were to be hanged to death. Thankfully, Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and his team stormed in at the last minute and saved them all.

June then got back on track with her plan, with the help of Lawrence. He agrees to put an altitude bomb on a plane that is set to carry a group of Commanders.

Sadly, the Commanders arrive early and, accepting his fate, Lawrence sacrifices himself so the plan can go ahead.

At the last minute, Nick also turns up and June watches in disbelief as he gets on the plane.

What follows is an emotional scene as June watches the plane take off, before it blows up mid-air.

Fans have been left emotional after the episode, with some devastated that Nick is dead, with others believing he got what he deserved after double-crossing June.

Either way, one thing they agree on is how incredible the episode was.

One said: “Dare I say one of the best scenes of the entire series.”

Another said: “The Handmaid’s Tale has been over its prime for quite a few seasons but holy s*** tonight’s episode is one of the best of the entire show. The last 10 minutes are fantastic and is top notch Handmaid’s. Elisabeth Moss delivers but Bradley Whitford reigns supreme and is my MVP.”

A third said: “This crazy b**** really just gave us the best episode of the series. Elisabeth Moss really is a generational talent.”

Someone else wrote: “Currently bawling over this week’s episode of Handmaid’s Tale. I shouldn’t be crying like this.”

As another added: “Just finished episode nine of The Handmaid’s Tale. That was probably the best episode of the entire series. Season 6 (and the series) has been incredible, actually, but this episode in particular deserves every award there is. Can’t stop crying.”

The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Channel 4 and is available to stream on Prime Video in the UK
