Simon Cowell 'hated' Peter Kay's parody shows as they 'undermined his success'

Simon Cowell was left enraged by Peter Kay’s parody shows which poked fun at a number of UK reality TV talent series.

The 60-year-old is said to have “hated” the funnyman’s interpretation of his hit ITV shows Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor.

Kay, 47, even managed to get X Factor narrator Peter Dickson to join in him the fun – which annoyed Cowell even more.

Kay is said to have told Dickson: “He hated it. Hated everything about it. Thought we were taking the p***, undermining his success. He sent me a really stinking email.”

Kay reportedly continued: “He was particularly upset about your involvement and I felt a bit guilty about that as I had given you my word, when we met, that it was an affectionate parody.”

The claims are made in Dickson’s new book called Voiceover Man.

Dickson goes on to say that Kay added: “After the reviews came in and the praise for it was universal, he decided it was OK. Called me to apologise. Nowt as queer as folk, eh?”

The 2008 Channel 4 spoof starred Kay as solo artist Geraldine McQueen, who later had two top five hits.

The claims have emerged after Kay’s eagerly awaited comeback tour had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Bolton star had been due to appear at Dance for Life charity gigs across the country, but the shows have been postponed due to the current social distancing rules.

Addressing the news in March, Kay told fans: “Obviously this is disappointing news but well and truly justified given the circumstances.

“We’ll get through this, together and then we’ll all have a great big dance for life.

“Stay safe and look after yourselves and the people around you,” he added.
