Davina McCall to present Changing Rooms reboot after Carol Smillie snub

Davina McCall will co-host the revamped edition of home makeover show Changing Rooms.

The Big Brother legend will join designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen to front the show in a move that is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

Channel 4 execs have decided Davina is the woman for the job, despite the show’s original presenter Carol Smillie publicly saying she wanted the series to return.

The original show ran on the BBC for just under a decade from 1996 to 2004.

Davina, 52, said: “I’m so excited to be presenting Changing Rooms.

“It’s the perfect time to bring it back. Everyone is going DIY and decor-mad!

“I can’t wait to see all the amazing transformations.

“I might even get stuck in myself if I’m allowed to be let loose with a paint brush.”

Meanwhile, Laurence, added to The Sun: “It’s taken quite a lot of coaxing to get me under the Changing Rooms banner once more, but nothing like as much coaxing as it’s going to take to squeeze those leather trousers back on.”

Speaking in August, Carol admitted she would love to return to the show if it was revamped.

“It was definitely the favourite show of my career, without a doubt. It would be the only show I’d come back to telly for,” she explained.

“It was the first time we’d had car-crash telly, when you would be sitting there with a cushion in front of your eyes, saying, ‘Oh no!’ It was sometimes like watching a disaster in slow motion.

“As a nation, we like to snoop around other people’s houses and that had never been done on TV before.”

Speaking in 2017 to Daily Mail’s Weekend Magazine, the Scottish TV personality admitted the show was the best time in her career.

Carol said: “In 1996 I was the original presenter of BBC2’s Changing Rooms – it was one of the first reality shows and is credited with starting the DIY craze of the late ’90s.

“It was the best TV experience of my career – we were a happy bunch who went into it naively but came out the other end as household names with a BAFTA nomination and invitations to both Downing Street and Buckingham Palace.

“It was the stuff of dreams, and all from watching paint dry!”
