GMB fans aghast as guest fat shames Santa but says he can visit during lockdown

Good Morning Britain fans finally got the answer to the question they were all waiting for on Thursday.

Hosts Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins chatted to Professor Shelley about whether or not Santa Claus will be able to visit children this Christmas as SAGE believes England may require a full lockdown in December.

During the debate, the Irish professor revealed that Santa could end up in intensive care if he did contract Covid-19 as he is “clinically obese.”

But things weren’t all doom and gloom though as she confirmed that Father Christmas is a key worker and will be able to deliver gifts to the good boys and girls this December.

Professor Shelley said: “”We have considered whether or not Santa Claus can travel this Christmas due to the restrictions.

“We realised everyone is asleep when he calls, and he travels so quickly there is no risk of transmitting the virus to anyone around the world.”

Discussing the segment on Twitter, one viewer moaned: “OMG this woman is roasting Santa and calling him clinically obese.”

Another asked: “Did she just fat shame Santa?”

A third wrote: “A woman is seriously saying on GMB that Santa is obese and if he got Covid he’ll be in intensive care! F**king hell.”

While a fourth person ranted: “Why in the name of god is this woman talking about the possibility of Santa being admitted to intensive care?”

Some parents were delighted that the expert confirmed that their children can receive a visit from the main man this Christmas despite lockdown rules.

Taking to Twitter, one fan posted: “Yes Professor Shelley – I love the fact you’ve clarified that Santa can cross borders and travel this Christmas. Thank you.”

Another added: “Great segment about Santa. Of course, he is a key worker.”

A third person penned: “That was really lovely to hear that scientist say that Santa can still visit kids this Christmas.”

While a fourth gushed: “The absolute cuteness of a professor on GMB explaining that Santa won’t have travel restrictions placed on him over Christmas! I was worried so I’m glad she has put my mind at rest.”

It comes after the news big family reunions may be banned at Christmas in England as the coronavirus second wave could last until March, a senior minister has warned.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said people should prepare now for the “realistic” prospect that high numbers of Covid-19 cases and deaths continue, so a normal festive period “won’t be achievable”.

His comments come as more areas prepare to go into Tier 3 – the highest band of restrictions in England – and follow another 24,701 infections and 310 fatalities across the UK.

Mr Buckland appeared to lay the ground for what rules will be in place over Christmas, explaining “all of us have a growing realisation that this is with us throughout the winter season”.

The second coronavirus spike “will last for a considerable period of time… right through to when the clocks go forward again at the end of March”, he told ITV’s Peston show.

He continued: “I think we’ve all got to be realistic that if we are seeing these trends continue right through December, then Christmas in its perhaps fullest sense won’t be achievable for any of us this year.
