Coronation Street’s Tyrone Dobbs and Fiz Brown are an iconic couple on the street, with their on-off romance fuelling two decades’ worth of storylines.
Though they have spent the best part of the past 10 years in a committed relationship, the sweethearts never made it down the aisle together.
Ahead of Tyrone’s explosive affair with neighbour Alina Pop, actor Alan Halsall discussed why the couple decided against making things official.
Speaking to Daily Star and assorted press, the actor, 38, said: “I think Tyrone’s proposed a couple of times but then he got skint.
“I think Tyrone pawned her engagement ring which I don’t think many women would have even stayed with him after that, to be honest with you.
“I think that’s part of it really, in terms of they just haven’t got around to it they just haven’t got the time, they’ve had a bit of a problem with Hope, he’s trying to run a business, and Fiz is changing jobs.
“Life just took over and actually their relationship has taken a back seat – and clearly their marriage did too.”
Fiz, played by the formidable Jenny McAlpine, decided she would pop the question in recent scenes, plotting an elaborate ceremony in Greece as a romantic surprise for Tyrone.
Sadly, when she broke the news to him, asking Tyrone for his hand in marriage, his response was a disappointment.
Alan admitted the couple has lost their spark in recent years, with the mundanity of family life seeping into the bones of their relationship.
“I think Tyrone and Fizz have just been okay, just plodding on,” he said.
“I actually think that’s the point. There’s no moment that they’ve lost the spark. There’s no actual day or time. I think it’s just a progression of their normal daily lives. Things have just got a bit boring, and the kids; it’s hard work.
“I think they absolutely love each other, it’s just that the spark has gone. It just happens, sadly.”
The mechanic has already developed feelings for Romanian twenty-something Alina, with sparks flying between the pair when they fixed her car together in the garage.
Musing over the unexpected affair storyline, Alan, who has been on the soap since the late 90s, admitted Tyrone is unable to fight his feelings.
He said: “I think actually Tyrone is just happy getting through day by day, he’s quite a simple fellow anyway but he basically gets his head turned by an attractive girl, an attractive proposition for him.
“It’s something different, it’s something new, it’s something exciting.”
