Line of Duty star Nigel Boyle has addressed the mood with fans after Sunday’s nail-biting finale, saying some of them “set themselves up for disappointment”.
During Sunday’s Line of Duty series six finale, his character Ian Buckells was revealed to be H, however some fans weren’t pleased with the outcome.
Nigel appeared on BBC Breakfast on Monday following the big reveal, and spoke of how it was inevitable that some people would be upset by Buckells being H.
He said: “If your expectations are somewhere, then you’re setting yourselves up for disappointment, and that’s not to say all fans are doing that, it’s just everyone’s got their own ideas and theories about how something’s going to pan out, and if everyone does that someone’s not going to be happy somewhere along the line.”
The actor, who has also appeared in Peaky Blinders, went on: “The fans have been brilliant, so many people have invested so much in this series and some of the fan theories themselves have been outstanding, so I think there’s always gonna be some element of disappointment.
“You can’t have every series end with a big shoot out, urgent exit required. Sometimes the subtler message is more important.”
He went on: “I sent a tweet out after the episode and jumped in a car and came over to the studio so I didn’t have a look at social media.”
Nigel said: “I think when people reflect and when they get back to work and start talking about it, maybe they won’t be so disappointed.”
For weeks, viewers of Line of Duty have been coming up with their own theories about who H could have been.

Many were unhappy when it was revealed that Buckells was H, and that he had been the one going back and forth between the police and OCG.
One tweeted: “I’m sorry but as a Line of Duty fan who has watched the series for years, I feel very let down by this finale. That ending was quite boring in my opinion. Ian Buckells being H?! This cannot be how the show ends.”
Another added: “Refuse to believe this is the end and Buckells is really H, there’s no way.”
And a third wrote: “For the Mother of God, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey, that was such an anti-climax to six series.”
It seemed that Nigel could see where some of the disappointment might come from, but suggested that if fans looked back they might start seeing how they got to where they were in the finale.
“I think with this season, more so than the other seasons,” he said, “people have been watching it not once, but two or three times and really analysing it.
“I think when you watch it again you’ll reaffirm some assumptions and see things that you’ve not seen.”
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One
