Kanye West files to legally change name to just 'Ye' for 'personal reasons'

Kanye West has filed to legally change his name, after deciding to go by just Ye.

Kanye filed legal documents, obtained by TMZ, that show he is asking the court to go from Kanye Omari West to make his famous nickname official.

The 44-year-old says in the documents that he decided to change his name due to “personal” reasons, but didn’t provide any further details.

TMZ reports that the name change is sure to go through as judges in California ordinarily approve name changes so as no evidence exists that the new moniker will be used to commit fraud.

The rapper has gone by the moniker of Ye for years, even naming his eighth album Ye and going by the nickname on Twitter.

As early as 2018, the star had declared he wanted to go by Ye, announcing in a tweet: “The being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE.”

Kanye also revealed that same year he was inspired by the Bible choosing the name Ye for his album.

“I believe ‘ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it means ‘you,’” he told radio host Big Boy.

“So I’m you, I’m us, it’s us. It went from Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confused, everything. The album is more of a reflection of who we are.”

The change in name comes just days before Kanye releases his next album Donda on Friday, August 27.

Kanye has held two listening events for the album at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, both to massive numbers, with respective totals of 3.3 million and 5.4 million people streaming the events on Apple Music.

He will be holding another listening party at Soldier Field in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday.

Pictures from Twitter suggest that Kanye is having a replica of his childhood home built on stage for the event.
