EastEnders' Brian Conley reveals truth behind Rocky nickname after identity twist

EastEnders star Brian Conley has shared the truth behind his character’s nickname.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday, Brian chatted hosts Dan Walker and Sally Nugent through the identity twist reveal which aired on the soap on Tuesday night – as his character Rocky revealed he isn’t who he said he is.

Supposedly Sonia’s father, Terry Cant was revealed to actually be Thomas Cotton – and intent on scamming Sonia out of her million pound property and running away with the cash.

But now Brian has explained why his character is known best as Rocky.

“It’s been fun, because I’ve been very cheeky, Cockney Rocky, and now to sort of reveal to everyone…” he explained. “I was trending! I was trending on YouTube, ladies and gentlemen!

“Everyone was going, ‘I can’t believe it!’, and for me it’s been a secret that’s been going ever since I started the show, and to now finally tell everyone, ‘Look, this is me’.”

He added: “And the reason I’m called Rocky as a nickname is because it keeps the continuity there, because otherwise they’d have to call me Terry or Tom so I’ve always been Rocky because it’s never been my real name, Terry Cant.

“So that’s why that’s happening.”

Another sweet moment in the interview came when Dan asked after his Strictly Come Dancing co-star, Rose Ayling-Ellis.

“Brian, really quickly because I’ve only got about 30 seconds – I just want to ask you about one of your other co-stars, Rose who’s doing Strictly,” Dan said.

“I’ve only known her for a couple of weeks on this programme, she is amazing isn’t she?”

Dan went on to explain that his own dad is deaf and so knows what it’s like to live with a hearing loss.

“I’ve got a deaf dad so for me to watch her doing what she’s doing on that programme, first live show this weekend – what an incredible woman she is.”

Brian responded: “I’m not a gambling man, but I’d put money on her because I just know she’s going to go all the way.”

He continued: “She’s not there because she’s deaf, she’s there because she’s a wonderful actor. She’s brilliant on this show and I just think it’s going to be a wonderful advert for the deaf community.

“She really deserves it. I’ve worked with her intensely on this and she is everything you dream of,” Brian gushed. “Extremely talented and a lovely person – a bit like me!”

“Yeah!” Dan agreed cheerfully.

EastEnders continues on Thursday at 7:35pm on BBC One.
