Robert Fyfe dead: Last of the Summer Wine actor who played Howard dies aged 90

Last Of The Summer Wine actor Robert Fyfe has died aged 90, it has been confirmed.

The actor who was best known for playing Howard Sibshaw first joined the hit BBC sitcom in 1985 and remained a loyal cast member until the show stopped in 2010.

Fans fell in love with his character, who was always trying to ensure his passionate affair with Marina remained a secret from his wife Pearl.

Describing Robert, his former manager Maxine Hoffman said he was “the most delightful client anyone could wish for”, before adding he was “a truly talented and versatile actor and much loved by everyone he worked with”.

Born Robert Douglas Fyfe, the actor had a lengthy career spanning from 1962 before retiring in 2018, first appearing in Dr Finlay’s Casebook before going on to star in films such as Around The World in 80 Days and Cloud Atlas.

Robert also appeared in Coronation Street, taking on the role of lollipop man, Malcolm Lagg, who was preparing to hand the job over to Dennis Tanner, appearing in seven episodes.

Since the news of his death, fans have flocked to social media to share their condolences.

Taking to Twitter, one heartbroken fan said: “RIP Robert Fyfe. You made your mark. Thank you.”

“Oh, good grief. RIP Robert Fyfe. Thank you for so many laughs over the decades,” said another.

While a third typed: “Love Summer Wine and Howard was such a funny character and played to perfection by Robert Fyfe. At least he’ll be reunited with so many of the Holmfirth gang. RIP Robert.”

“I’m saddened to hear that the wonderful Robert Fyfe who played Howard so brilliantly in Last of the Summer Wine has passed away at 90. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” tweeted a fourth.

Before a fifth added: “I wonder which lady was waiting for him at the gates // Marina or Pearl? Thank you for the comedy memories #RobertFyfe.”

The post references both of Robert’s on-screen lovers, Pearl (played by Juliette Kaplan) and Marina (played by Jean Fergusson), who both passed away in 2019.

Robert was dealt the ultimate heartache when his wife Diana died just several weeks before his passing.

He is survived by his three sons, Timothy, Nicolas and Dominic.
